It’s the season we’ve all been waiting for—the holidays. And while we love the weather, the festivities, and the warm winter fashion, we’ve anxiously been awaiting this time of year for one main reason—the influx of classical music concerts! We’ve laid out a list of the must-see concerts happening in Philadelphia this week. Our advice? Pencil in as many as you can! 

 

WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 11, 2019 

A PHILLY POPS CHRISTMAS: SPECTACULAR SOUNDS OF THE SEASON

Concert Details:  Enjoy this dazzling performance led by Principal Guest Conductor David Charles and featuring the Philly POPs Festival Chorus, the Philadelphia Boys Choir, the more! Expect to hear classical music as well as interpretations of modern songs. The best part? There are so many performances in December. If you can’t catch the Dec. 11 performance, try for the performance on Saturday, Dec. 14; Sunday, Dec. 15; Wednesday, Dec. 18; Friday, Dec. 20; or Saturday, Dec. 21.

THURSDAY, DECEMBER 12, 2019 

WYNTON MARSALIS’ BLUES SYMPHONY

Concert Details:  Watch and listen as Pulitzer Prize winner Wynton Marsalis switches seamlessly from jazz band to symphony orchestra for his Blues Symphony, a performance celebrating all sorts of American and African American music. The program will also include an interpretation of Shostakovich’s Violin Concerto No. 1.

VERA QUARTET, ROBERTO DÍAZ VIOLA

Concert Details:  The Vera Quartet has earned top prizes in several competitions despite only being established for three years. This program, featuring esteemed violist Roberto Díaz, showcases Mendelssohn’s late masterpiece, his B-Flat Major String Quintet. The program will also include work from Brodhead and Haydn.

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 14, 2019 

CHRISTMAS KIDS’ SPECTACULAR

Concert Details:  Take a musical journey through a festive, family-friendly celebration of your favorite Christmas songs—all in sing-along fashion! The program will feature works from Tchaikovsky, Bizet, Williams, and more.
