On March 15, GatherNYC launches its Spring 2020 season in downtown Manhattan. Continuing its unique weekly concert experience, GatherNYC brings the musical community together for classical performances by some of New York’s most admired artists. The peaceful experience of exquisite music lasts for one hour, featuring some storytelling by winners of the Moth StorySLAM and — let’s not forget — fresh coffee and pastries.

This special series takes place in the modern underground theater, SubCulture, providing an escape from the noise of New York City. Cellist Laura Metcalf, along with husband and guitarist Rupert Boyd, are founders and co-artistic directors of the special experience. They are known as international touring duo Boyd Meets Girl. Their Spring 2020 season launches along with the series’ 50th concert since it was founded in 2018.

GatherNYC artists to look forward to:

Lara Downes (March 15)

Pianist Lara Downes, admired for her musical vision and inspiration, will be presenting her latest project, “Some of These Days.” This is a collection of multiple genres, including jazz, R&B, country, and more. It reflects on the spiritual aspect of American social justice, freedom and identity. According to Downes, “This music pulls at so many parts of me — and pulls them together. The part that is a strong woman; the part that is an audacious artist. The part that is a brown girl. The part that is my father’s daughter with roots up in Harlem. This is my history.”

Kinan Azmeh CityBand (March 29)

Syrenian clarinetist and composer, Kinan Azmeh, will perform his own version of “Arabic jazz” with the Kinan Azmeh CityBand. Azmeh himself has gained international recognition for his soulful and rich sound. He is a graduate of New York’s Juilliard School of Music, has toured with famous cellist Yo-Yo Ma, and performed with esteemed ensembles such as the New York Philharmonic

Rupert Boyd, Garrett Arney, and Sam Suggs (April 12)

Co-founder of GatherNYC and esteemed guitarist Rupert Boyd is joined by percussionist  Garrett Arney and double bassist Sam Suggs to present the North American debut of Alejandro Viñao’s Tres Cantos Mirando al Sur, in addition to other works.

Brentano String Quartet (May 3)

The world-traveling Brentano String Quartet, created in 1992, has won many awards and performed at some of the worlds’ most prestigious concert halls. The quartet is currently in residence at the Yale School of Music, praised for its “passionate” and “warm” sound.

Christina Courtin and Alex Sopp (May 10)

Singer-songwriter and violinist Christina Courtin, along with longtime friend, flutist and visual artist Alex Sopp, are to perform at GatherNYC to create a unique and charming sound. The friends and collaborators are founders of the Brooklyn chamber orchestra The Knights.

From March 15 - May 31, 2020, don’t miss out on the chance to experience the spiritual nourishment and community connection this series provides.
