How Cellist Inbal Segev Creates Her Own Opportunities, Not Waiting For The Phone To Ring

Inbal Segev

In 2019, cellist Inbal Segev records composer Anna Clyne’s new cello concerto with the London Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Marin Alsop.

Three years ago, Inbal Segev and her husband Thomas Brener, managing director at Quadrant Capital, helped Marin Alsop and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra start the New Music Festival. This year’s theme will be music by women composers of which she is very proud. And rightly so – classical music needs more women-driven projects in a field that’s too often male saturated.

Now in 2019, three artists join forces—composer Anna Clyne, cellist Inbal Segev, conductor Marin Alsop—record a new cello concerto with the London Philharmonic Orchestra. It’s a beautiful and dynamic way to celebrate women working at the top in today’s classical music culture.

Segev will also embark on a tour featuring Clyne’s concerto with several orchestras around the United States.

Master class tutorials on YouTube

Like most artists, Segev wants to give back. But not many artists do it in a very visible and tangible way. Thanks to YouTube, she gives free master classes for the cello in a series called “Musings With Inbal Segev”. It’s certainly worth checking out for any aspiring cellists.

“There are a lot of resources online now, resources that we didn’t have 20 years ago,” she said. “One can study scores, see master classes, listen to great performers – all for free, and instantly and conveniently. I am not an expert, but it seems that training teachers to use these resources while still guiding their students is important.”

Segev’s embrace of opportunities is contagious and we love her view on life: “Create your own opportunities, don’t just wait for the phone to ring…be nice and be on time.”
