World-Renowned Pianist Wu Han Appointed Artist-in-Residence at John J. Cali School of Music at Montclair State University

She Will Lead Students Through a Series of In-Depth Masterclasses Focusing on Chamber and Solo Piano Works of Franz Schubert

Critically acclaimed and world-renowned pianist Wu Han was recently appointed the new artist-in-resident at John J. Cali School of Music at Montclair State University. This unique position, which was created by the university for a master in the musical field, is meant to bring wide-ranging expertise to the community.

Wu Han, who was named Musical America’s “Musician of the Year,” has risen to international prominence as an artistic director, an education, a recording artist, a concert performer, and a cultural entrepreneur.  She’s set to bring her wealth of knowledge to students of music at Montclair State University through a series of public masterclasses focused on the solo piano works and chamber pieces of Franz Schubert, as well as through private coaching sessions.

Wu Han’s series of masterclasses will begin in Fall 2019 and will take place in Leshowitz Recital Hall on the Montclair State University Campus. Not only will the masterclasses be free and open to the public, but they will also be live-streamed beginning in October.

Additionally, each semester of masterclasses will conclude with two free concerts in the Leshowitz Hall, featuring Wu Han performing alongside students who took part in the series. The concert performance on December 14, 2019 (Saturday) will include chamber works by Franz Schubert and will begin promptly at 7:30 PM. The April 6, 2020 (Monday) concert performance will focus on the composer’s solo piano works and is set to begin at 7:30 PM.

The announcement of Wu Han joining the Montclair State University repertoire of talented artists was well-received throughout the university and the artist-in-residence program.

“We are honored to host Wu Han as a Distinguished Artist-in-Residence for the 2019-2020 academic year,” said Thomas McCauley, Interim Director of John J. Cali School of Music. “ Wu Han brings a wealth of experience as a world-class pianist and chamber music coach to our students in the John J. Cali School of Music, and we all look forward to learning a great deal from her as the school year progresses."

Wu Han is a celebrated artist that’s risen to international prominence in her time as a performer. Consistently in high demand as a recitalist, soloist, and chamber musician, Wu Han appears in the world’s most prestigious venues and often performs extensively as a duo partner with cellist David Finckel.
