Michael Christie’s 2019-2020 schedule will debut his first season as music director of New West Symphony 

A well-known conductor famed for his “thoughtfully innovative” talent, Grammy-winning Michael Christie announced in late September that he’d serve as the Music Director of the New West Symphony for the 2019-2020 Season. 

In a press notice released by Jensen Artists, Christie is described as “equally at home  in the symphonic and opera worlds” and as a conductor who is focused on making the audience experience at his performances entertaining, enlightening, and enriching. 

Complimentary words like these aren’t just present in this release, in fact, Christie’s talent for directing and his passion for music has long been reported by a myriad of publications. Highly acclaimed publications such as The New York Times, The San Francisco Chronicle, The Financial Times, and the Star Tribune have all published raving reviews about Christie, applauding him for his ability to meld “fire and ice,” direct with “suave assurance” and “precisions and pizzazz.” 

Further, The New York Times reported, “Michael Christie is a director open to adventure and challenge,” while the Cincinnati Enquirer stated, “If Michael Christie represents the future of music in this country, the future looks promising indeed.” 

Though Christie will be serving his first year with the New West Symphony, the Symphony itself will be celebrating its 25th anniversary—an opportunity that Christie is thrilled to be a part of. 

“I’m very excited to start my tenure with the New West Symphony family and hope that my desire to connect with patrons and the broader community will be reflected strongly over this and coming years,” Christie said in the aforementioned press release.  

 “The overall season programming speaks to our desire to feature an array of diverse world-class artistry among our guest artists as well as our New West Symphony musicians promising to delight those seeking the standard repertory along with those interested in new concert experiences,” he said. 

Christie’s 2019-2020 season will also feature a debut with Lyric Opera of Kansas City (in the production of Mozart’s The Abduction from the Seraglio), as well as guest spots as a conductor with the San Francisco Opera (to lead Mason Bates’ The (R)evolution of Steve Jobs, for which he won a 2019 Grammy Award for Best Opera Recording), the Sacramento Philharmonic & Opera, and the Indiana University  Opera and Ballet Theatre.
