The Sebastians’ Shout for Joy Concert to Usher in Holiday Season, Featuring Guest Soloists Soprano Katharine Dain & Trumpeter Steven Marquardt
The Sebastians’ Shout for Joy program Will Explore the Intersection of German and Italian Styles of the Baroque Era
The Sebastians—a dynamic music ensemble that specializes in music of the baroque and classical eras—will usher in the holiday season with a unique, exciting holiday program entitled Shout for Joy on Wednesday, December 4, 2019, beginning at 7:30 PM.
The concert, which will be hosted at Good Shepherd-Faith Presbyterian Church on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, is taking a special look at the intersection of German and Italian styles of the Baroque era, with Johann Sebastian Bach’s cantata Jauchzet Gott in allen Land (Shout for Joy to God in Every Land) at the heart of the program.
However, the program will also include work from German composers Christoph Graupner and Heinrich Schütz, Italians Giuseppe Sammartini and Antonio Vivaldi, and - adding a pan-European dimension to the proceedings - Frenchman Georg Muffat.
Special featured guests for the program include Dutch American soprano Katharine Dain and trumpeter Steven Marquardt.
The Sebastians will be accompanied by an expanded complement of instrumentalists performing the Concerto Grosso Op. 5, No. 6 by Milan-born composer Giuseppe Sammartini, whose style had an influence on Graupner (also featured in this program). Throughout the program, the Sebastians will continue to explore a hugely diverse and varied collection of European styles and influences.
This unique exploration will continue on February 15, 2020, with the multi-disciplinary program “Words and Music,” where esteemed Japanese American poet Kimiko Hahn will join the ensemble, reading her own modern writings interspersed with programmatic music from the Baroque era.
