Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center Launches Miami Residency as Part of Its 50th Anniversary Celebration
CMS Miami is Announced to Kick Off in January 2020
The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center has announced in honor of its 50th-anniversary celebration, a new residency program will be launched in January 2020 in Miami, Florida.
The CMS, the largest producer and presenter of chamber music in America, is pleased to return to the Miami community with the launch of its new, annual CMS Miami Residency. Acting in conjunction with the Miami host Committee, CMS Miami will present two public concerts in early January 2020 (January 9 and 10) at the historic Colony Theatre in Miami Beach. Further, CMS Miami will present educational opportunities for talented area high school students.
The CMS had a once-robust presence in Miami in the last two decades of the 20th century, and the Chamber Music Society is ready to return to the cultural life of the city as part of its ongoing 50th-anniversary celebration.
“Miami is a global city and a major hub for the performing and visual arts. We are excited to bring the artistry of CMS to this dynamic city of culture,” said CMS Artistic Directors David Finckel and Wu Han.
“Part of the mission of CMS is to spread the art of chamber music to new audiences far and wide, and we can’t wait to bring incredible performers as well as classics and discoveries of the repertoire to this exciting project.”
The January performances will feature a diverse group of musicians. On January 9, both David Finckel (cellist) and Wu Han (pianist) will perform—both are highly regarded as esteemed and influential classical musicians. The energy they bring to the concert performances promises to be unmatched as they perform sonatas for piano and cello by Bach, Beethoven, Britten, and Mendelssohn. Additionally, Wu Han will perform selections for piano from Spanish composer and pianist Isaac Albéniz.
On January 10, the intoxication seriousness of French music will be celebrated with works by Camille Saint-Saëns, Maurice Ravel, and Gabriel Fauré. Additionally, the January 10 program includes early works by Saint-Saëns and Fauré that recreate the elegant atmosphere of 19th-century Parisian salons. In between, the Ravel sonata, written soon after World War I, uses violin and cello to produce a composition of unique, austere beauty.
During CMS’ Miami residency, several partnerships will be announced with area institutions to build on the high-quality classical music education currently in Miami through the art form of chamber music and the special, one-of-a-kind opportunities that CMS can offer to young, musically gifted artists.
