German Violinist Carolin Widmann Performs in New York Debut with Orpheus Chamber Orchestra as Presented by 92Y

Carolin Widmann, a preeminent German violinist, will make her New York debut with Orpheus Chamber Orchestra on Saturday, December 7, 2019, at 8 PM at Kaufmann Concert Hall. Presented by 92nd Street Y, Widmann will take the lead in Kurt Weill’s stunning Concerto for Violin and Wind Orchestra, Op. 12. This work combines the composer European pedigree with dashes of the swinging, exciting Broadway-style he’d later fully adopt in his work.

Bookending the Weill Concerto performance will include works for winds by Mozart: a transcription of the Overture to The Marriage of Figaro and the operatic Serenade No. 10 in B-flat Major, K. 361 “Gran Partita.”

Widmann, known as a wildly versatile musician, and her artistic abilities span the great classical concerti. Hugely in demand, Widmann’s activities are broad—from performing new commissions specially written for her, solo recitals, a wide variety of chamber music collaborations, and increasingly using period instruments for performances (including play/ direction from the violin).

Widmann was awarded the Bayerischer Staatspreis for music in 2017, honoring her exceptional musicianship and her individuality. She also received the International Classical Music Award (for the Concerto Category) for her 2016 released recording of both Mendelssohn’s and Schumann’s Violin Concertos with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe.

The Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, the collection performing with Widmann, is a collaboration of 34 member musicians who work together as a collective and rotate leadership roles for all works performed, giving flight to unconventional and exciting interpretations.

Tickets to Widmann’s New York debut concert can be purchased at 92Y’s website or by calling (212)-415-5500.
