Classical Post Awards 2019: Zachary James, Most Innovative Singer: Baritone
Bass Zachary James has been described and lauded for many bass-related traits. The most poignant of all? “A true stage animal” (Opera News). Zachary’s huge and robust bass, resonated with substantial force, is notably both “intrinsically beautiful” (Opera News) and “cavernous,” providing him with the vocal depth, color, and resonance to bring a voice to the stage unlike any other.
Though his career is filled with bright notes, one of his most memorable roles was his creation of the role of Abraham Lincoln in the world premiere of Philip Glass’ operate at the Perfect American at the Teatro Real in Madrid, a role he reprised for London National Opera and Australia’s Opera Queensland and the Brisbane Festival. Zach makes his debut at the Metropolitan Opera in their 2019/2020 season, reprising the role of Amenhotep III in the Oliver Award-winning production Akhnaten. No matter his role, Zachary brings “electrifying” and “exquisitely focused” performances every time.
