Classical Post Awards 2019: Chrystal E. Williams, Most Innovative Singer: Mezzo-Soprano
Mezzo-soprano Chrystal E. Williams, described as “strong and so assured,” is both polished and poised, charismatic and commanding as she negotiates the complexities and intricacies of her craft. A “fiery and gorgeous” mezzo-soprano (Opera News), Chrystal has sung leading roles with the Birmingham (U.K), Washington National, Knoxville, Sarasota operas, as well as the Opera Delaware, Caramoor, and many others. Chrystal holds degrees from the Yale School of Music, Carnegie Mellon University, and the Academy of Vocal Arts.
Her 2019-2020 season brought a fresh debut at the Metropolitan Opera as Maketaten in Akhnaten, as well as an entire list of career-boosting appearances just this season at the Minnesota Opera, the Seattle Symphony, and Orchestra 2001. Her 2020 season brings a collaboration with co-creator Brazilian accordionist Felipe Hostins as they launch “Forrópera” in partnership with Astral and Esperanza Arts Center, melding together the Brazilian tradition of Opera with Forró.
