From Harlem Eateries to Singing with Andrea Bocelli, Malcolm Merriweather Is a Man About Town

Malcolm J. Merriweather is a man of many talents. Not only is he the ninth Music Director and conductor of The Dessoff Choirs, but he is also an Artist in Residence at Union Theological Seminary, and the Artistic Director of  “Voices of Haiti,” a 60-member children’s choir in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, operated by the Andrea Bocelli Foundation.

Merriweather’s 2018-2019 season included his Mostly Mozart debut conducting the West Choir in a world premiere of John Luther Adams’s In the name of earth, and appearances with Andrea Bocelli and “Voices of Haiti” at Madison Square Garden. Before his next performance is scheduled for February 29th at Union Theological Seminary, we sat down with Merriweather to play the favorites game. From food to free time, here are Malcom J. Merriweather’s favorite things.

Where do you love to eat in New York City?

I love to explore restaurants in the best neighborhood in New York. Harlem! Some of my favorites include: Blvd Bistro, Renaissance Harlem, and Cove Lounge! You can find scrumptious food and friendly service at all three.

If you had a dream place to live, where would it be and why?

I really love living in New York. We have everything in this city. Of course, it would be enhanced if I live in a penthouse duplex with 5,000 square feet of living space!

What has been your favorite place to travel? I love to travel and explore different places around the world. I love Sicily because the seafood is amazing and you encounter the history of so many cultures — from Italian, French, African, Muslim and more. I love London and the UK at large for the grand cathedrals. Traveling to Berkshires is always really fun in the summer.

I spent a summer as a fellow at Tanglewood and I will never forget the beautiful rolling hills and sunsets. I recently visited Ghana and had an amazing time. The food and culture really amazed me. I also really enjoy going to Great Falls, Montana to visit my uncle. I can relax and I never get tired of the breathtaking landscapes.

What brands do you love and why?

I shop Ted Baker, Montezemolo, Miguel Antoinne. They provide class and quality. You can't go wrong with them.

On a night when you’re not performing, what do you love to do?

I love to have dinner parties, relax and exercise! It's all about balance.
