Swedish composer Jacob Mühlrad joins us on the Classical Post Podcast as our first guest. He’s just released a major album on the Deutsche Grammophon label called Time, exploring themes of mortality, the supernatural, and creating a “sound for god” — if god could be contained to music. Jacob is a serious artist who’s making a big splash in the music world that’s underscored by the complexity of this new album, encompassing about 10 years worth of his compositional work.

In this podcast, we discuss the album more in-depth, but particularly gain insight into Jacob Mühlrad’s inspiration as an artist. Here are just some of the unique individuals he draws inspiration.

On his playlist now: FKA twigs, ASAP Rocky, Drake, Cardi B

Architecture

Le Corbusier (Swiss-French architect, designer, and pioneer of modern architecture)

Fashion

Virgil Abloh (Artistic Director at Louis Vuitton and fashion designer/CEO of Off-White)

Art/Design

James Turrell (Artist known for work in Light and Space Movement)

Richard Serra (Artist heavily involved in the Process Art movement)

Esoteric Minimalism

Scandinaivan Style

Jacob collaborated with Alexander Wesley (music producer for Swedish House Mafia) to create the official music video of his new album Time. One of the salient points to be made about this music video is the “totality of art”. Not only thinking of the music, both Jacob and Alexander wanted to create complete integration of the visual and aural worlds. Watch the video here to see what they’ve done.

The topic of success was one of the most insightful things drawn from this interview. When posed the question what success means for him, Jacob simply responded by saying it’s the “opportunity to influence”. Certainly his accomplishments will garner him a platform to influence many others in art music and other realms for years to come.
