Kalena Bovell: The Versatile Conductor Breaking Musical Boundaries
Kalena Bovell isn’t your typical conductor. While her impressive resume includes performances of classical works by Mozart and Florence Price, her artistic aspirations stretch far beyond the traditional concert hall. Bovell, the former assistant conductor of the Memphis Symphony Orchestra and currently guest conductor at numerous other organizations including Opera Philadelphia, is known for her dynamic presence and dedication to expanding the boundaries of classical music. In a recent Classical Post podcast conversation, Bovell revealed a passion for metal music, expressing a desire to someday conduct for bands like Evanescence. Her enthusiasm for genres outside classical may come as a surprise, but it speaks to her broader philosophy: there should be no limits in music or in life.
“I would love to be that conductor who, let’s say, goes on tour with Evanescence and conducts her shows,” she shared. “And then next month, I’m conducting a Brahms symphony or Mozart or Florence Price.”
This wide-ranging ambition stems from Bovell’s belief that being a well-rounded conductor involves constantly pushing her boundaries. “I want to continue stretching myself as a musician,” she said. “Why limit myself?” For Bovell, versatility is not about ego or proving herself to others; it’s about fulfilling her own artistic curiosity and staying open to new challenges. Whether it’s conducting film scores, opera, or symphonies, her goal is to embrace every facet of the musical world.
This desire for exploration extends to her career trajectory as well. While she loves guest conducting and performing internationally, Bovell dreams of having a “home base” where she can grow with a community and build lasting relationships. She envisions herself as a music director who can guide an ensemble through a journey of mutual growth and artistic discovery.
“I would love to have a home base within a community that I can grow with, that I can learn from, and challenge,” Bovell explained. At the same time, she wants to continue her guest conducting career, striving to make the most of every opportunity within her lifetime. “It’s important to me that I try everything I can within this lifetime.”
Her drive for continuous growth doesn’t come without balance. When asked about what success means to her, Bovell’s response reflects her evolving priorities: “Success for me nowadays is being able to wake up in the morning, call my family, have friends, go outside, and travel. Honestly, success for me right now is being able to live.”
Bovell’s grounded approach to life contrasts with her soaring musical ambitions, painting a portrait of an artist who is not only deeply committed to her craft but also mindful of what truly matters. Her passion for music is undeniable, yet she recognizes that her personal well-being and relationships are equally important components of success.
In terms of upcoming appearances, Bovell is taking on an exciting role with Opera Philadelphia, where she will conduct The Anonymous Lover by Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges. This opera, composed by one of the first known Black classical composers, is a perfect fit for Bovell’s dedication to promoting works by underrepresented voices. Known for its elegance and lively melodies, The Anonymous Lover offers Bovell the opportunity to bring a fresh perspective to an important but often overlooked part of the classical repertoire. “Opera is an incredible storytelling medium,” Bovell notes, “and I’m excited to contribute to a company like Opera Philadelphia that is redefining what opera can be.” This opportunity not only reflects her versatility as a conductor but also her dedication to exploring genres that challenge and invigorate her artistry.
Whether she’s conducting Beethoven, leading a cutting-edge opera, or dreaming of collaborating with Billie Eilish, Bovell’s versatility and openness to new experiences continue to define her artistic path. In an industry that often emphasizes specialization, she stands out as a conductor who refuses to be confined by expectations. Instead, she remains dedicated to exploring all that music—and life—have to offer.
As Bovell continues to chart her own course, one thing is certain: she will keep challenging herself and expanding the boundaries of what a conductor can be. With her upcoming appearances, operatic engagements, and projects that push the envelope, Kalena Bovell is not just making her mark on the classical music world—she’s transforming it, one performance at a time.
